and i'm michelle griego. tis 6-- we begin with san francisc's super bowl hopes. the n-f-l will announce todf the city is in the running o host the event. >>> good morning, everyone. it is 6:00 and the nfl will announce today if san francisco is in the running to host a super bowl. >> reporter: we are not just talking about any super bowl. san francisco wants to host super bowl 50, a huge anniversary for the nfl that would include more than a week of events and celebrations. this is how this would work out. all the festivities would happen in san francisco. the actual game at the new 49ers stadium would be 40 miles down the road in santa clara. it's expected to open in 2014 and a stadium has to exist for two seasons to host the super bowl. san francisco is hoping to bid ant 2016 and 2017 games. the only super bowl in the bay area was in 1985 at stanford. the mayor submitted the application back in august and this is what's next. today nfl will announce which cities are in the running. if san francisco is one of them, it will host a plan on may 7th of next year. two weeks la

will san francisco get to host the super bowl in the near future? >> the nfl is expected to answer that question today. melissa harrington is live at the 49ers new stadium to explain. >> reporter: we are not just talking about any super bowl. they want to host super bowl 50, a huge event for the nfl including more than a week of celebration. all the festivities would happen in san francisco but the stadium 40 miles down the road would host the game. only one super bowl has been held in the bay area and that was in 1985 at stanford stadium. the mayor and 49ers have been quietly working on this bid and submitted an application in august. today the nfl is expected to announce which cities are in the run for the 2016 and 2020 super bowls. they will formally submit a host city plan on may 7th, then two weeks later the city makes a presentation to the 32 nfl owners. we still won't know for sure whether or not they will be a host city till later next year. at least today we'll know if they are in the running. >> thank you. the giants now face a deficit in the national league championship

stadium. first off, bob, when is the nfl expected to make the announcement? >> reporter: we spoke with the team, the 49ers, earlier this morning. good morning, laura. the initial thought was they could hear today. now they are hearing it won't be until tomorrow. that's when the nfl owners gather in chicago for their fall meeting. that's when they know if they made the final cut for consideration. if the 49ers do host the super bowl in 2016 or 2017, the game would be played in the new $1.2 billion stadium built behind me in santa clara, but some of the official parties would take place 40 miles north of here in the city of san francisco. in part because of the team's history in the city by the bay, but also because san francisco mayor ed lee is one of the main players in putting the bid together. to give you a sense of the loyalty the 49ers have toward sf, team owner judd york says if the team wins a super bowl, the victory parade would be in san francisco. we spoke with santa clara's mayor about his thoughts about a super bowl in his town while some of the official festivities tak
